Nelson Anderson & Sarah Tierney work with Jr Girl Scouts on their Lake Cleary Art ProjectsWorkshops vs. Classes

Which will work best for you?

To see a complete guide of weekly classes available each session, visit our Class Calendar.  For students looking for workshops visit our Workshop Calendar.

WORKSHOPS - which are generally held nights and weekends.  Workshops are a great way to study with a specific instructor for a specific reason.  They are available through out the year and range from drawing to fusing glass into art.

WEEKLY CLASSES - The second is weekly classes which are offered long-term and allow students to develop projects under the guiding eyes of a specific instructor.  In general, for both adult and youth classes, our class sessions are offered in 5 week cycles and run all year round.

We try to keep all of our information up-to-date and accurate for our on-line visitors.  Our instructors contract with us to provide their classes to our community.  They are each professional, established artists with art careers of their own.  They each share their extensive wealth of knowledge with students through their own creative means.  Nothing "canned" or "cookie cutter" but rather creative and free-flowing.  We think we have the best staff around.  And, we think you will agree!

About Our Art Program

Mike Rada Landscape & Oil Painting class discuss composition and designClasses for Everyone

Savage Art Studios and Gallery (SASG) provides art students of all skill levels and ages the opportunity to study representational art in an intimate class environment.  Our instructors are professional artists with a broad range of specialties, experiences and backgrounds. Each class offers beginning to advanced students a grounded foundation in basics while helping to move students, to their next level of artistic development.  The skill level of our students ranges from beginning to professional while students ages range from 10 to 86!  So we truly do have something for everyone!

Course of Study

Student artist working on her first painting in Mr Anderson's Step Up Your Art ClassBEGINNING - We will always recommend that students wanting to have the strongest foundation in art training begin at the beginning.  Simply put, for beginning students we recommend that they work in black and white (either drawing or painting) for a period of time, then move to color.  We find new students who begin using this tried and true method of art training more quickly build a foundation of skills that will make their later works stronger and more confident.  Developing their eyes to better see values, shapes, drawing errors and perspective are the foundation of good painting skills.  WHAT CLASSES TAKE BEGINNERS?  All classes take beginners.  DO I HAVE TO START IN B&W? No you don't have to start in B&W, that is only a recommendation.

SASG Instructor, Bonnie Featherstone as featured in the Star Tribune 2011INTERMEDIATE - Students who have come from other programs or our beginning levels move into working with color and more advance design and composition elements.  Instructors focus on individual projects for each student that help them strengthen their core skills.  All of our instructors are supportive and encouraging which builds confidence in their stills.

ADVANCED - At this level students are always working to refine the skills they have been developing.  Students are designing and composing their own project and painting ideas with the input.  Instructors work one-on-one with each student to encourage each to move to the next level of skill development.  This is a very personalized approach, so classes are small to allow Instructors to work equally with each student.

Figure & Portrait Sketch Groups
